Party for Volunteers

The CYCA Volunteer Thank You Party celebrated every effort put forth toward the betterment of our community in 2008. The community of Cooper-Young accomplished so many things in 2008 and we were able to do so because of volunteers.
We would like to thank The Memphis Literacy Council for letting us use their facility again this year.

Snack bags for Police and Fire Department

Cooper-Young cares about the men and women of the Memphis Police and Fire Department who protect our community! Each year the CYCA fills bags with portable treats and drinks for the men and women that protect our sleeping community on Christmas Eve. We help fill the gap for those on overnight duty. These folks really appreciate this effort. On Christmas Eve there isn’t any where for them to eat, everything is closed.

Holiday Cookie Party

December’s General Meeting was our traditional Holiday Cookie Swap Party at the Community Office located at 2298 Young Ave. Folks brought their yummiest holiday treats to share with neighbors and friends.

St. Jude Marathon

CYCA volunteers manned the Cooper-Young Aid Station at Cooper and Nelson across from the Memphis Drum Shop. For information about the St. Jude Marathon go to www.stjudemarathon.org.

2008 Forest Faire

Forest Faire 2008

Cooper-Young Community Associtation teamed up with VECA and other Memphis Neighborhood Associations for the 2008 Forest Faire.

October was National NeighborWoods Month and we wanted to share the message that planting and caring for trees adds value to our communities. Trees are not just a local concern but a national one as well.

National NeighborWoods Month was created by the Alliance for Community Trees to celebrate the benefits of trees in the places people live. Alliance for Community Trees encourages tree planting events and tree care, creating tree canopies that increase the health and livability of neighborhoods for us all.

From the even posting:
There will be an educational speaker series at the Pavilion every hour, with topics ranging from the Proper Planting and Care of Trees, Pruning, Hiring an Arborist, and Bee Keeping—don’t miss the Bee Dance! Local environmental organizations will be on hand to provide information about their efforts, answer your questions, and identify trees (bring an 18” branch). Great trees will be available at good prices so come buy a canopy tree, ornamental tree or shrub. Local artisans will be selling their creations and there will be live music. All of this within the grounds of the beautiful Memphis Botanic Garden, West Tennessee’s only level 4 arboretum. Admission is free. Bring your family, pack a picnic and enjoy the lush setting while learning about the value trees add to our community.

The Forest Faire was made possible by the Alliance for Community Trees and the Home Depot Foundation.

National Night Out 2008

Tuesday August 5th.

Target 'Blue' Logo

National Night Out is a great time to get to know your neighbors. The CYCA has worked for over 30 years to help make our community a safe place to live, work, worship, and play. Over 20 parties were held throughout Cooper-Young this year. Many of these parties were hosted by block clubs or individuals who wanted to help make our neighborhood safer. The CYCA offered up to $50 reimbursement for supplies to party hosts who signed up with Robert Grisham, our block club chairman. Target, who is the corporate sponsor for National Night Out, donated a $20 gift card for each party to be raffled off. Neighbors signed the roster sheet at each party and could pick up a raffle ticket and the party hosts drew the winners!

KaBoom Playground Project

MARCH 20th – Rain or Shine

Cooper-Young has a new playground at Peabody Elementary School!

Kaboom Logo

The CYCA together with Peabody Elementary, submitted an application to KaBoom to build a playground in our community at our local elementary school. And guess what…WE GOT IT!! Home Depot is the corporate sponsor that helped make this possible.

This new playground provides much needed green space and play space for our growing neighborhood. With a safer, larger play structure and features like an outdoor classroom, it also improves our neighborhood school.

The Home Depot

Natalie, our KaBoom Project manager, came to town on January 24th and lead a Design Day at Peabody School. Students of Peabody along with some neighborhood children got to draw and explain what they considered to be their dream playground. Afterward, the adults got to chime in and make our own recommendations.

Click here to see the playground design.

From that point forward several committees were put in place to help the big event run smoothly and successfully. KaBoom lent a big hand in the planning stages with material and guidance. They have already built 1000 playgrounds with The Home Depot!

Volunteer Thank You Party

Sunday, January 20, 2007

Volunteer Thank-You Cake

The CYCA hosted its annual Volunteer Thank You Party on Sunday, January 20, at the Memphis Literacy Council. All volunteers who participated in CYCA sponsored events in 2007 were invited to attend. Volunteers enjoyed a variety of appetizers and desserts from Cooper-Young restaurants. The Blue Fish, Celtic Crossing, Central BBQ, Lou's Pizza Pie, and Square Foods contributed their specialties to make the event a success. Volunteer and neighbor, Suzzane Striker, baked a Thank You cake and other goodies for the party. The party gave CYCA Board Members an opportunity to thank the many volunteers, as well as a time for friends and neighbors to get to know each other outside of their roles as volunteers. The Association also announced Beth Pulliam as the 2007 recipient of the Alexia Hampton Volunteer of the Year award and Chip and Meredith Armstrong as the recipients of the Friends of Cooper-Young award. The Association would like to extend a heart-felt thanks to the volunteers that were unable to attend this year's gathering and look forward to seeing you all in the coming months. Please continue to visit this site for upcoming volunteer opportunities or email volunteer@cooperyoung.org if you are interested in volunteering.
